Emergency Dental Care: What to Do When Dental Problems Can't Wait

Dental emergencies rarely happen at convenient times. Whether it's a knocked-out tooth during a weekend soccer game or a sudden toothache in the middle of the night, knowing how to respond can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. At Finch & Dudley Dental in North York, we're here for you when dental emergencies strike.

What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?

Some situations require immediate attention:

  • Knocked-out tooth (avulsed tooth)
  • Severe toothache
  • Broken or cracked tooth with pain or sharp edges
  • Lost filling or crown with pain or sensitivity
  • Abscess (infection with swelling and/or fever)
  • Significant bleeding that won't stop
  • Jaw injury affecting bite or ability to open mouth
  • Object stuck between teeth that won't come out with flossing

What to Do: Emergency Guide

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical – ideally reimplant within 30 minutes:

  1. Find the tooth and handle it by the crown (white part), not the root
  2. If dirty, gently rinse with milk or saline – don't scrub or remove tissue
  3. If possible, gently place the tooth back in its socket
  4. If reimplanting isn't possible, store the tooth in milk, saliva, or saline
  5. Call us immediately and come in as quickly as possible

For baby teeth, do not reimplant – but still call us to assess the area.

Severe Toothache

  1. Rinse with warm salt water
  2. Gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped food
  3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
  4. Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed (avoid aspirin directly on gums)
  5. Call us to schedule an emergency appointment

Broken or Cracked Tooth

  1. Rinse with warm water to clean the area
  2. Apply cold compress to reduce swelling
  3. If there's a sharp edge, cover with dental wax or sugarless gum
  4. Save any tooth fragments
  5. Call us promptly

Lost Filling or Crown

  1. If you have the crown, clean it and try placing it back temporarily using denture adhesive or toothpaste (not regular glue)
  2. For a lost filling, cover the cavity with sugarless gum or dental cement from a pharmacy
  3. Avoid chewing on that side
  4. Call us to schedule repair

Abscess

Dental infections can be serious and may spread:

  1. Rinse with mild salt water several times daily
  2. Do not apply heat or aspirin to the area
  3. Call us immediately – you may need antibiotics
  4. If you experience fever, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems, go to the emergency room

Broken Braces or Wires

  1. If a wire is poking, cover the end with orthodontic wax, a cotton ball, or a pencil eraser
  2. Don't cut the wire – you might swallow or inhale it
  3. Call us to schedule repair

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While you can't prevent every emergency, you can reduce risk:

  • Wear a mouthguard during sports and recreational activities
  • Don't use teeth as tools (opening bottles, tearing packages)
  • Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candy
  • Don't bite down on hard objects like pens
  • Maintain regular dental visits to catch problems early
  • Address minor issues before they become emergencies

Emergency Preparedness

Consider keeping a dental first-aid kit:

  • Dentist's emergency contact number
  • Small container with lid (for knocked-out tooth)
  • Saline solution
  • Dental wax
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Cotton balls or gauze
  • Cold pack

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Some situations require hospital care:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Jaw fracture or dislocation
  • Facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing
  • High fever with dental infection
  • Trauma involving other injuries

For purely dental emergencies during off-hours, call our emergency line rather than going to the ER, which may not have specialized dental care available.
